back story:at seventeen, licia phoenix left jupiter bay for the big city. she'd always felt like she was bigger than the small town, that she was destined for something... greater. two years later, licia came back to jupiter bay with a newborn baby in her arms. she'd met a man in the city, fallen in love, had a baby, and... then had been abandoned by that man. hurt and unsure of how to raise a baby at nineteen, licia went to the only person she knew could help her, her mother. rachel phoenix took her daughter in of course, and promised to give her all the help she needed. despite that, the responsibility was too much for licia to handle. after giving her daughter a name, marlene, licia took off once again to fulfill her dreams, leaving baby marlene in her grandmother's care.
marlene grew up with only her grandmother for company, and a few aunts and uncles who visited whenever they could. her mother never came back, she sent birthday cards and money, but that was the extent of their contact. marlene didn't mind. you couldn't miss what you never had. besides, her grandmother loved her a lot and spoiled her! she was six when her differ powers manifested themselves. it was a stormy night. marlene, disobeying her grandmother, she decided to go and play outside. lightning started to strike, and marlene attracted it like a lightning rod. however, none of the lightning hurt her, not even when she was encased in it. after asking her grandmother about it, because even a child knew that was odd, marlene realized that she was different from other people. her grandmother was as well, but she controlled ice, not lightning. they had to keep their powers a secret, her grandmother told her repeatedly. this strange power wasn't a good thing. marlene should try to use it as little as she could.
marlene was blessed in the sense that she never had to hide who she was at home. that didn't mean she liked who she was, oh no. marlene didn't like being different, being a differ, but she tried to deal with it the best she could. and she's still dealing with it. only now, instead of being a little kid, she's a busty, immature seventeen year old.

- friendly; marlene is one of the most friendly people you'll ever meet. she'll approach anyone who looks a little lonely and strike up a coversation with them. she's pretty helpful as well, sometimes overly helpful, but hey, it's the thought that counts.
- loyal; much like a dog, once marlene's taken a liking to you, she'll be a friend for life. she'll stand by her friends no matter what and stick up for them when the occasion demads it.
- compassionate; marlene's got a soft heart. she's very understanding of others' problems and listens to things with sympathy and an open mind.
- courageous; marlene is a brave person. she won't hesitate to try something new, go where no other has gone before. she enjoys throwing herself in odd situations because she's not scared. no, she's curious. and a few risks make life fun.

- paranoid & superstitious; marlene is very superstitious. perhaps it comes form all those horror movies she watches... anyway, she believes in things like black cats bring bad luck, breaking mirror brings bad luck... she's also paranoid; having been the target of some perverts, she always feels like someone's watching... and waiting for her to be alone.
- dramatic; whether she's happy, sad, or in pain, marlene makes a big deal about it. it's her way of seeking attention. she'll be loud, she'll over react, and she won't stop easily. her dramatics can be quite entertaining. or bothersome. marlene screaming her head off... it's odd.
- judgemental; marlene is someone who jumps to conclusions. she'll judge people based on appearances and first impressions and will be hard pressed to change her mind.
- lazy; or maybe unmotivated would be a better word. marlene doesn't do things like chores or homework, or anything. most of the time, she just doesn't want to try. marlene hates things like physical excersize and waking up early in the morning! it's not worth the effort.
