the day was bright; the sun was shining, though the weather lately was growing colder and colder as fall approached. the skies clear blue, not a fluffy white cloud in sight - no threat of any rain or early snow, which was good. the warmth had not gone unnoticed by the jupiter bay residents, as the main plaza was crawling with people, out enjoying the sunshine in short-sleeves and shorts. most were going out for lunch, as it was around noon now. this was also the case for madeline, as she wandered the cobbled stone square, pen tucked behind her ear, her notebook under her arm and a long turkey sub in her grasp. she'd always had a huge appetite; this was an average snack for her. she was lucky she had a high metabolism and was active enough to burn off calories the moment she consumed them, or else she'd be bigger than canada.
madeline's gaze swept the plaza, looking for a place to sit down and eat, maybe taking some observations as she did so. it seemed that all of the benches that were set up around the large fountain in the center of the square were full of high school students and children. her expression was growing more and more sour as she looked around, getting impatient. her legs were starting to ache dully from just standing around, and her sub seemed to be getting subtly more slippery in her hand. eventually, she just gave up, and seated herself on the broad cement edge of the fountain. it was colder here, and most likely against some kind of rule, but she didn't particularly care at this point; she pulled the wrapping from around her sub sandwich and dug in, setting her notebook on her lap.
as she ate, the sixteen-year-old looked around the plaza, her eyes narrowing. any one of them could be differs - all of them could be, as far as she knew. paranoia flooded her mind, and suddenly she was a but jumpy; she'd heard tales of differs that could read minds. what if they knew she was onto them? would they try to take her out? she didn't like the thought of getting whacked, she was so young. but, she thought, that was the rick of being in the business. even though, technically, she wasn't yet, but it was a comforting thought nonetheless. taking a large bite of her food, madeline opened her notebook to the first clean page - there was about one fourths of usable paper left, she'd have to buy another one soon - and pulled the pen out of her hair. she started jotting down observations of those she thought looked pretty sketchy, her eyes glancing around the square every now and then.

Misery hated sunny days. Not only hated, oh no. She loathed them. Heat was the perfect excuse for pretty, curvy girls to go around in skirts so short they should be illegal, flaunting their flawless bodies. While she kept on dressing like a nun, with her long sleeves and mid-thigh dress. Whatever. It was not going to ruin her day!
Determined not to let the today's obnoxious sunny-ness spoil her mood, Misery walked across the plaza looking for a place to sit. As many others, she was here to eat, carrying an apple and hiding a spongy, deliciously vanilla-filled Twinkie. She didn't even know why she had chosen the main plaza as her lunch place today. She usually disliked crowds, something that always filled the plaza, and preferred to eat somewhere people didn't really go. Like the library or the docks. Not the plaza.
And living up to its name, the main plaza was packed with people. Giggly high school girls sat on benches and kids played in the water with paperboats, splashing everything around them. The only one who looked a bit weird was this girl in the fountain- she was nervously looking around while speedily writing on a notebook. Just because she was in such a great mood, Misery glared at her and let out a little 'hmph!' before swiftly turning around.
As she walked without really looking where she was going but searching for a place to sit that was not the concrete sidewalk, this guy bumped into her and Misery barely managed not to fall flat on her back. The only thing that could have made this more cliché was him spilling coffee all over her. As soon as she regained her balance, she tightened her hands into fists, narrowing her eyes. "Get the hell out of my way." she hissed, glaring venomously at the poor guy. The man turned a little pale, obviously not expecting such an aggressive reaction. Mumbling an embarrassed apology, the guy did and Misery stormed off.
However, someone had finally left his spot on the benches around the fountaint, so skipping past another girl who also wanted the place, Misery finally sat down and allowed herself a little smug smile. That man looked positevely freaked out. And what was he, thirty? So she was more towering than she had thought. Ignoring the sour look she was getting from the girl who seemed to have been waiting in line for her current sitting spot to vacate, she gave a bite to her apple and glanced around her, looking for something to do.

the sun slowly moved, little by little, across the sky as the minutes dragged on. after little under forty minutes, madeline's labors began to bear fruit; she had two and a half pages full of possible differ suspects. she grinned proudly at her work. there would be much investigating to do! this would keep her occupied for a good month. and she hadn't even finished everyone in the plaza! her mood having improved significantly from when she'd originally sat down, she set her pen on her paper and finished off the rest of her sub. delicious. she sat back, enjoying the cool spray of the fountain behind her, mixing with the warmth of the sun. the combined sensation tickled her skin lightly. she smiled softly to herself, closing her eyes to enjoy the feeling, until a feeling of another's gaze made her look up.
hm. it appeared that some blonde chick was glaring at her. madeline blinked, then her eyes narrowed back at her. with a sound that was too quiet for madeline to pick up, the girl turned her head away, in a very stuck-up manner. madeline was stunned; what was with that girl's negative feelings toward her? suddenly, it hit her in a bang - she was a differ! she had to be! she'd seen her looking about, rooting out the differs, and knew that she was on to her! ohh, this was great. madeline had never had such a reaction before; sometimes people would just stare at her weird, but such an open display of hostility was just like a smoking gun! grinning, proud at her flawless success, madeline set her notebook on the edge of the fountain and hopped up, jogging after the mean-girl.
and oh boy, was she mean! as she followed, madeline observed the female bump into a guy, probably in his thirties, and glared something awful at him. man, if looks could kill! she spat something roughly at him, which seemed to scare the guy half to death. he stumbled out of her way, and she stomped on, madeline resiliently on her tail, as it were. finally, she snagged a spot on a bench from another guy, just standing up. she seemed to sneer mockingly at a girl who had apparently been waiting for the spot too, and bit into the apple in her hand. wasting no time, madeline hopped up and sat on the back of the bench beside the mean girl. "i know you know i know you're a differ," she murmured with no subtly, her voice low enough that only she and the girl could hear.

Miser choked.
"I know you know I know you're a differ."
Some voice next to her whispered, and Misery kind of felt like Snowwhite, choking on a piece of apple. Coughing loudly and earning quite a few stares, she whipped around with a scowl set on her face. "What?" she hissed as she glared venomously. However, on the inside she was kind of freaking out. What was up with this girl? What if someone had heard her? Differ paranoia was skyrocketing to the moon these days, and Misery didn't want to be burned for heresy, or whatever they did to differs thess days. She opened her mouth and closed it again. "Take it back."
[/color] she spat out rather dumbly, in lack of a better answer. How the hell had she found out? Damnit. Misery tried calming down. At least the girl hadn't shouted it. She was safe. She glanced around for a second before returning to the girl. Wasn't she... yeah, she was! The suspicious looking girl by the fountain who seemed to be slightly paranoid. Now Misery really relaxed. Forcing a smile, she stared sweetly at the girl. "I'm not a differ. You're wrong, girl." she said, carefully mouthing the words that slid silkily from her lips. Persuasion. Oh, how she loved it. "You don't really think I'm a differ, do you? What's your name?"[/B] she almost let a smug smile out. She had her now. A lil' psychic and a few questions to distract her and that was it. She'd never see the girl again in her life. She smiled. status: complete. word count: 262. tagged: mads! notes: ohdear. i'm so sorry this took so long! i was overwhelmed with homework and... yeah.
